Neuroendocrinology Research

It is fairly well understood that the brain controls everything your body, but the actual mechanism for carrying out a lot of what the brain instructs to be done is your hormones. Hormones are how messages get transmitted around the body. Therefore the interaction between the brain and the endocrine system which controls hormone production is pretty important. This is the area of focus for neuroendocrinology research. There is a great deal that can be learned and a number of illnesses that can be treated by understanding the connection. The research is still in the early days but so far the results have been encouraging. In the not too distant future there will likely be a large change in the way that we treat illness that came about because of problems with the endocrine system.

The goal of neuroendocrinology research is to study how the brain interacts with the endocrine system. The endocrine system is what controls the hormones which are important for regulating our body's functions. It has been determined that most of these functions are controlled by the brain and that many hormone related issues are the result of problems in the brain rather than in the endocrine system itself. This realization opened up a whole new field of research and has been very helpful in dealing with a variety of medical problems. The research hasn't all been a one way street, many neurological conditions can now be treated because of the research that has been done on how the brain affects the endocrine system

Endocrinology has long been an important area of medical research since it is fairly well established that things like diabetes, growth and development problems and sexual dysfunction were the result of an imbalance of hormones. In most cases the treatment for these illnesses is to replace the missing hormone with a synthetic one. However once it was discovered that the release of hormones was usually controlled by the brain it opened up other possibilities for curing these types of illness. There has been a great deal of research into getting the brain to release the right amount of hormone rather than having to use hormone replacement therapy as a means of treating endocrine problems.

One of the side benefits of neuroendocrinology is that it has turned out that many neurological disorders are also the result of issues with hormones. The result is that treatments are now being developed to treat these issues with hormone replacement therapy. Illnesses like schizophrenia may potential be cured as the result of this kind of research. There is a long way to go but so far the results have been promising. Given that between them endocrine and neurological diseases are two of the most common forms of chronic illness there is a large scope for research. The brain and your hormones pretty much control everything in your body if they aren't working properly you are going to have some pretty serious health problems.
